Attendance Calculator

Work out your attendance percentage and how many classes you can still miss before you drop below the requirement.

You are meeting the 75% requirement. Of the 20 remaining classes you can still miss up to 8 and finish the term at or above 75%.

Your attendance percentage is classes attended ÷ classes held × 100. Attend 18 of 20 classes and you sit at 90%, comfortably above a 75% requirement. Across a 40-class term with 20 classes left, you could still miss up to 8 of them and finish at exactly 75%.

How the attendance calculator works

Attendance is a simple ratio: the number of classes you actually turned up to, divided by the number that have been held so far, expressed as a percentage. This tool takes those two counts and, optionally, the total number of classes scheduled for the whole term, then answers the question every student really cares about — not just where you stand today, but how much slack you have left. If you are already above your course’s minimum, it tells you the maximum number of the remaining classes you can afford to skip. If you have slipped below, it tells you how many of the classes still to come you must attend to climb back to the line, or says honestly when the term’s target is no longer reachable.

attendance % = attended ÷ held × 100 — max misses = floor(attended + remaining − required × total)

required is the threshold as a fraction (75% → 0.75); remaining = total − held. Max misses is clamped between 0 and the number of classes left.

Worked example: 18 of 20, aiming for 75% across a 40-class term

You have attended 18 of the 20 classes held so far and your course requires 75% attendance over all 40 classes in the term.

  1. 1
Divide attended by held. 18 ÷ 20 = 0.9, so your current attendance is 90%.
  2. 2
Compare with the requirement. 90% is greater than 75%, so you currently meet the threshold.
  3. 3
    Count the classes left. remaining = total − held = 40 − 20 = 20 classes still to come.
  4. 4
    Apply the max-misses formula. floor(18 + 20 − 0.75 × 40) = floor(38 − 30) = floor(8) = 8.
  5. 5
Read off the result. You can miss up to 8 of the remaining 20 classes and still finish at 30 ÷ 40 = 75%.

What common attendance targets allow

Maximum classes you can miss across a full term at each threshold, assuming you attend every other session. Attendance policies vary by school and course — always check your own.

80%miss up to 8miss up to 6miss up to 4

66%miss up to 13miss up to 10miss up to 8

Reading the result sensibly

Two cautions. First, the “can still miss” number assumes you attend every class you do not deliberately skip — one unplanned absence eats into the same budget. Second, attendance rules differ enormously between institutions and even between courses at the same school: some count only lectures, some weight seminars or labs, and some treat excused and unexcused absences differently. The calculator works purely from the counts you enter, so if your school excludes certain sessions or forgives medical absences, subtract those before you type the numbers in. Attendance policies vary by school and course — treat this as a planning aid, not the last word from your registrar.

How many classes can I miss at 75%?
It depends on the total number of classes in the term. The rule is: max misses = floor(attended + remaining − 0.75 × total), where remaining = total − held. For a 40-class term you can miss up to 10 in total; enter your own numbers to get the exact figure and how many misses you have left.
How do I calculate my attendance percentage?
Divide the number of classes you attended by the number held so far, then multiply by 100. For example, 18 attended out of 20 held is 18 ÷ 20 × 100 = 90%. The calculator does this automatically and compares it against the threshold you set.
What does the “total classes this term” field do?
It unlocks the projection. With it, the tool works out how many of the classes still to come you can miss while staying above the requirement, or — if you are already below — how many you must attend to recover. Leave it blank and you still get your current percentage and pass/fail status.
What if I am already below the required attendance?
Enter the total classes for the term and the calculator shows the minimum number of the remaining classes you must attend to reach the requirement by term end. If even attending every remaining class would leave you short, it says so honestly rather than giving false hope.
Does the calculator count excused absences?
No — it works only from the counts you enter. If your course forgives medical, religious, or otherwise excused absences, exclude those sessions from the “held” and “attended” figures before entering them so the percentage reflects the classes your policy actually counts.
Why must the inputs be whole numbers?
Attendance is counted in whole class sessions, so classes held, attended, and total are all integers. The required percentage can be any value from 1 to 100. The tool guards against impossible inputs, such as attending more classes than have been held.
Is 75% the standard attendance requirement everywhere?
No. 75% is common at many universities, but requirements range from around 66% up to 90% for clinical or practical courses, and some programs have no fixed minimum. Attendance policies vary by school and course, so set the requirement field to match your own syllabus.
