To find the grade you need on remaining work, use needed = (target − current × (1 − remaining)) ÷ remaining. With an 82% current grade, a 90% target, and 40% of the course still ungraded, you’d need (90 − 49.2) ÷ 0.40 = 102% — just out of reach, so lower the target.
How it works
Whatever is already graded is locked in for its share of the course. This tool solves for the average you’d need across all the work that’s left — not just one exam — to land your target overall grade. Worked example
Current grade 82, target 90, with 40% of the course still ungraded.
- 1 Lock in the graded portion. 82 × (1 − 0.40) = 49.2 points secured.
- 2 Points the rest must add. 90 − 49.2 = 40.8 points still needed.
- 3 Divide by the remaining weight. 40.8 ÷ 0.40 = 102 — just out of reach, so aim for a 90 target instead, which needs 96.
Reading the answer
Over 100%. The target can’t be reached with the weight that’s left. Lower it, or find extra credit.
Zero or below. You’ve already clinched the target — though most courses still require you to submit the remaining work.
Between 70 and 95. Achievable with focused effort; treat it as your study goal for the rest of the term.
