IELTS ↔ TOEFL Converter

Convert between an IELTS band and a TOEFL iBT score in either direction.

Equivalent TOEFL iBT
94

Based on the official ETS concordance table (nearest band).

To convert IELTS to TOEFL, use the official ETS concordance, which links each IELTS band to a TOEFL iBT total. An IELTS band of 7.0 maps to a TOEFL iBT of about 94, and an 8.0 to about 110. The relationship is not linear, so always treat a converted figure as a close guide, not an official score.

How the IELTS–TOEFL conversion works

IELTS reports a band from 0 to 9 in half-point steps; the TOEFL iBT reports a total from 0 to 120. Both measure English proficiency, but the scales are shaped very differently — IELTS bands are broad, while TOEFL points are fine-grained. ETS, which administers the TOEFL, published an official concordance linking the two so universities can compare applicants who took different tests.

This tool reads that concordance directly. Enter a band or a score in either direction and it returns the nearest matching row. Notice the relationship is not linear: near the top of the range a half-band step covers far fewer TOEFL points than it does lower down.

Reading the table

To convert an IELTS 7.0 to a TOEFL score.

  1. 1
Pick your direction. IELTS to TOEFL looks up the band; TOEFL to IELTS finds the nearest score.
  2. 2
Find the nearest row. An IELTS band of 7.0 maps to a TOEFL iBT of 94.
  3. 3
Read across. So a 7.0 IELTS is comparable to roughly a 94 on the TOEFL iBT.

When you need this conversion

A program lists a minimum in only one test. If a university quotes a TOEFL minimum but you have an IELTS band, convert to see whether you clear it.

You are deciding which test to take. Knowing the equivalent target on each helps you pick the one that fits your strengths. If you took the Duolingo English Test instead, the Duolingo to IELTS converter estimates your band first.

You are comparing your two results. If you have sat both, converting to one scale shows which is genuinely higher.

Caveats

The concordance estimates comparable ability, not an exact equivalent — a converted figure is a close guide, not an official conversion. The two tests also differ in format, especially the Speaking section, so individual results can vary. Always check the specific test and minimum each program states.

Where does the conversion come from?
The official ETS IELTS–TOEFL concordance table, using its published midpoints.
Is it exact?
Scores map to the nearest band or point; treat it as a close guide, not an official conversion. The two tests measure overlapping but not identical skills.
Which do universities prefer?
Most accept both — check each program’s stated minimum for either test, since some name only one.
Why isn’t the relationship a straight line?
IELTS bands are wide and TOEFL points are narrow, and both tests bunch test-takers differently across the range, so a half-band can cover many or few TOEFL points depending on where you are.
Does a converted score count for admissions?
No. Universities use your actual reported test result. The conversion is only for comparing the two on a common scale.
Which test should I take?
If you read your equivalent targets and find one comfortably within reach, take that one. Otherwise, pick by format: IELTS has a live Speaking interview, while the TOEFL is fully computer-based.
