Your overall course grade for each possible final score.

To find the grade you need on a final, use required = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight. For a 75% current grade, an 85% target, and a final worth 30%, you’d need 108.3% — meaning the target isn’t reachable and should be lowered.

How the final grade formula works

Everything you have done so far — homework, quizzes, midterms — is already baked into your current grade. The only unknown left is the final. If the final is worth 30% of the course, then your current grade is locked in at the other 70%, and you just need to work out how much the final has to contribute.

required final = (target − current × (1 − weight)) ÷ weight

grades in percent, weight as a decimal (30% = 0.30)

Worked example

Current grade 75, target 85, final worth 30%:

  1. 1
Lock in your current grade. It counts for everything but the final: 75 × (1 − 0.30) = 52.5 points toward the course.
  2. 2
Find the points the final must add. Subtract from the target: 85 − 52.5 = 32.5 points still needed.
  3. 3
    Divide by the final’s weight. 32.5 ÷ 0.30 = 108.3 — above 100, so this target isn’t reachable. Drop the target to 80 and you’d need 91.7.

Common scenarios

The result is above 100. The target can’t be reached with the weight left on the final. Lower the target, or ask whether extra credit is available.

The result is zero or negative. Your completed work already secures the target — you could skip the final and still hit your goal (check your syllabus for minimum-final rules).

You need 70–90%. Realistic but real work. This is where focused, spaced revision pays off the most.

You need below 50%. You are comfortably ahead. Don’t coast, but the pressure is off.

Translating a letter target to a percentage

If your target is a letter grade, convert it to the bottom of its range first — aiming for the floor keeps you safe.

How do I find my current grade?
Check your gradebook (Canvas, Blackboard, Moodle) — it usually shows a current weighted average. If it doesn’t, compute it from your individual scores with the Class Grade calculator first.
What if the final’s weight isn’t a clean number?
Decimals are fine — enter 33.33 for a one-third weight. If your syllabus lists points instead of a percentage, convert: a 200-point final in a 700-point course is 200 ÷ 700 = 28.6%.
What about letter grades?
Convert your target letter to the bottom of its percentage range (see the scale above) and use that as the target — it gives you a safety margin.
Why is the result above 100?
Your target isn’t reachable with the weight remaining on the final. Lower the target, or check whether extra credit can change the math.
What does a zero or negative result mean?
Your completed work already secures the target, so even a 0 on the final keeps you at or above it. Check your syllabus, though — some courses require a minimum final-exam score to pass.
What weight do I enter for the final?
The final’s share of your course grade as a percentage — a final worth 30% of the grade is 30. If your syllabus lists points, divide: a 200-point final in a 700-point course is 200 ÷ 700 = 28.6%.
