Class Grade Calculator

Combine weighted categories — homework, tests, the final — into your overall grade.

Weights total 100%.

To calculate your class grade, multiply each category’s score by its weight, add them up, and divide by the total weight: overall = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight). With homework 90 (20%), a midterm 78 (30%), and a final 85 (50%), that is 18 + 23.4 + 42.5 = 83.9%, a B.

Weighted categories

Most syllabi split your grade into weighted categories — homework 20%, midterm 30%, final 50%, and so on. Your overall grade is each category’s score multiplied by its weight, all added up. A high score in a small category moves your grade far less than the same score in a big one.

overall = Σ(score × weight) ÷ Σ(weight)

dividing by total weight handles syllabi that don’t add to 100

Worked example

Homework 90 (20%), midterm 78 (30%), final 85 (50%).

  1. 1
    Weight each score. 90×0.20 = 18.0, 78×0.30 = 23.4, 85×0.50 = 42.5.
  2. 2
    Add the weighted scores. 18.0 + 23.4 + 42.5 = 83.9.
  3. 3
Divide by total weight. Weights sum to 1.00, so the overall grade is 83.9% — a B.

When the numbers don’t line up

Weights don’t total 100. No problem — the calculator divides by the total weight you enter, so a partial syllabus still gives your correct current grade so far.

A category isn’t graded yet. Leave it out to see where you stand now, or enter a hypothetical score to see where you’d land. To work out the score you’d need on what’s left to hit a target, switch to the Grade Needed calculator.

Dropped lowest scores. If your syllabus drops the lowest quiz, average the quizzes you’re keeping before entering that category’s score.

Do the weights need to add to 100?
No — the result is normalized by the total weight you enter, so partial syllabi work fine.
Can I add more categories?
Yes — add as many categories as your syllabus lists.
How is the letter grade decided?
From the overall percentage, using a standard US scale.
How do I handle a category that isn’t graded yet?
Omit it to see your current standing, or enter a “what-if” score to project your final grade.
What if my syllabus drops the lowest score?
Average only the scores you’re keeping for that category, then enter that as the category score.
Why does a high homework score barely help my grade?
Each category counts only for its weight. If homework is 20%, a perfect score adds at most 20 points to your weighted total, while the same effort in a 50% final moves your grade more than twice as far.
