Russian Grade to GPA
Convert a Russian five-point transcript to a US 4.0 GPA, grade by grade.
Each 5 counts as 4.0, each 4 as 3.0, and each 3 as 2.0, averaged across 22 courses.
The average as a Russian institution reports it — useful alongside the US figure, not instead of it.
Courses marked зачёт (pass) carry no numeric mark and are normally excluded from the average, as are failing 2s in most evaluations. Count only graded courses here.
Russian marks convert one to one: a 5 (отлично) is a US A worth 4.0, a 4 (хорошо) a B worth 3.0, and a 3 (удовлетворительно) a C worth 2.0. A transcript with twelve 5s, eight 4s, and two 3s averages 76 ÷ 22 = 3.45 on the US 4.0 scale.
Five points, but only three of them are used
The Russian scale runs from 1 to 5, yet in practice a university transcript contains only three passing marks. 5 — отлично is excellent, 4 — хорошо good, and 3 — удовлетворительно satisfactory. A 2 — неудовлетворительно is a fail and is normally not recorded on a final transcript, because the course must be retaken.
Alongside these, many courses are assessed as зачёт — a credit or pass with no numeric mark — and its counterpart незачёт. Because зачёт carries no grade, it is excluded from averages in the same way US pass or credit-only courses are excluded from a GPA.
Convert the grades, not the average
Russian institutions report a средний балл, the arithmetic mean of the numeric marks out of 5. It is tempting to rescale that figure — multiply by 0.8, say — but the result is not a GPA, because the two scales do not start from the same floor: a US 4.0 scale runs to zero, while a Russian transcript effectively starts at 3. Converting each grade first and then averaging is what credential evaluators do, and it is what this tool does.
Courses recorded as зачёт carry no numeric mark and are left out of the count, as are failing 2s in most evaluations.
Worked example
A transcript with twelve 5s, eight 4s, and two 3s.
- 1 Count each mark. Twelve courses at 5, eight at 4, and two at 3 — twenty-two graded courses in total. Leave out any зачёт entries.
- 2 Convert to US grade points. 12 × 4.0 = 48, 8 × 3.0 = 24, and 2 × 2.0 = 4, giving 76 grade points.
- 3 Divide by the number of courses. 76 ÷ 22 = 3.45 on the US 4.0 scale.
- 4 Compare with the Russian average. (12 × 5 + 8 × 4 + 2 × 3) ÷ 22 = 98 ÷ 22 = 4.45 — the средний балл, which is not the same number.

What the diploma adds
Russian degrees can be awarded с отличием — with distinction, the red diploma — which typically requires a large majority of 5s, no 3s, and an excellent final examination result. That distinction is worth stating on an application, because it conveys standing within the cohort in a way a converted GPA cannot.
Report the средний балл alongside the converted figure where the form allows: “4.45 / 5 (≈ 3.45 / 4.0)”. Because the Russian scale is coarse — three passing marks against a US scale with plus and minus steps — evaluators such as WES will work from the transcript itself rather than from a self-calculated number.
