Frequently asked questions

Common questions about math — the concepts behind the tools above.

What is the order of operations (PEMDAS)?
PEMDAS is the rule for the order you evaluate an expression: Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication and Division (left to right), then Addition and Subtraction (left to right). Multiplication and division share the same rank, as do addition and subtraction, so you work those pairs from left to right rather than one always before the other.
What is the difference between an expression and an equation?
An expression is a combination of numbers, variables, and operations with no equals sign, such as 3x + 5, and it can only be simplified or evaluated. An equation sets two expressions equal, such as 3x + 5 = 11, and it can be solved to find the values of the variable that make it true.
What does a negative or fractional exponent mean?
A negative exponent means take the reciprocal: x⁻² = 1 ÷ x². A fractional exponent means a root: x^(1/2) = √x, and more generally x^(m/n) is the n-th root of x raised to the m-th power.
What does the derivative of a function represent?
The derivative gives the instantaneous rate of change of a function, which equals the slope of the line tangent to its graph at a point. For example, if position changes over time, its derivative is velocity.
