Polish Grade to GPA
Convert a Polish ocena on the 2–5 scale, half steps included, to a US 4.0 GPA.
Dobry is read as B in credential evaluation, which is 3.0 on the US 4.0 scale.
Polish universities award grades in half steps between 2 and 5, and not every institution uses 5+. For an overall figure, convert each course grade and take the average weighted by ECTS credits.
Polish grades run from 2 to 5. A 5 (bardzo dobry) is an A worth 4.0, a 4 (dobry) a B worth 3.0, and a 3 (dostateczny) a C worth 2.0; a 2 is a fail. The half steps 4.5 and 3.5, written 4+ and 3+, are a B+ and a C+.
A short scale with half steps
Poland grades on a compact scale where only four values pass. 5 — bardzo dobry is very good, 4 — dobry good, and 3 — dostateczny satisfactory, with 2 — niedostateczny the fail. Between them sit the half grades 4.5 and 3.5, usually written on a transcript as dobry plus and dostateczny plus or simply 4+ and 3+.
Some universities also award a 5+ (celujący) for outstanding work, though it is far from universal — many Polish institutions cap the scale at 5. Where it exists it reads as an A+, which on an unweighted US scale is still 4.0.
Only six values, so each one matters
With so few steps, a single grade moves an average much more than it would on a percentage scale. That also means a Polish average carries less resolution than a US GPA: a 4.2 average describes a record somewhere between good and very good, without distinguishing much further. Converting grade by grade and averaging the US points preserves as much of that as the scales allow.
Worked example
Converting a grade of 4 (dobry).
- 1 Read the ocena from the transcript. The course grade is 4 — dobry.
- 2 Check for a half step. A 4+ or 4.5 is a different grade from a plain 4, and converts to a B+ rather than a B.
- 3 Find the US letter. Dobry is read as a B in credential evaluation.
- 4 Read the grade point. A B is 3.0 on the US 4.0 scale.
- 5 Average across courses. For an overall figure, convert each grade and weight the average by ECTS credits.

Degree results and the diploma
A Polish degree carries a final result derived from the course average, the thesis mark, and the final examination, and it is reported on the same 2–5 scale. Some universities also award the diploma z wyróżnieniem — with distinction — for a high average combined with a strong thesis, which is worth stating on an application because it conveys standing within the cohort.
Poland uses ECTS credits throughout, so a weighted average is straightforward to compute and is what most institutions publish. When reporting abroad, give the Polish average with its maximum — “4.3 / 5.0” — alongside any converted figure, since a reader who knows the system will prefer the original.
