Convert a Pakistani university percentage to a letter grade and a 4.0 GPA.

Pakistani universities set their own cut-offs within the HEC framework, and some — including the University of Karachi — use a finer table with D+ and A+ grades. Your transcript legend takes precedence.
On the four-point scale most Pakistani universities use, 85–100 is an A worth 4.0, 80–84 an A− worth 3.7, 75–79 a B+ worth 3.3, and 70–74 a B worth 3.0. So a 77% converts to a 3.3, and anything below 50 fails.
Percentages behind a 4.0 scale
Pakistani universities award course marks as percentages, then convert them to letter grades and grade points on a 4.0 scale — the same maximum US institutions use. The cumulative figure, the CGPA, is therefore already in a familiar range, and the conversion question is usually about a single percentage rather than the overall average.
The Higher Education Commission provides the framework, but each university sets its own exact cut-offs within it. The bands on this page are the most widely used version; the University of Karachi, among others, publishes a finer table that adds A+ and D+ grades with slightly different boundaries.
Why the bands are uneven
The intervals are not equal. The top bands cover five percentage points each, but the middle of the scale tightens — C+ spans 61–64, C spans 58–60, and C− spans 55–57 — before widening again for D. That compression around the pass mark means a difference of two or three percentage points can move a grade by a full step, which matters when a borderline course sits near 60.
Worked example
Converting a course percentage of 77%.
- 1 Take the course percentage. The transcript records 77% for the course.
- 2 Find the band. 77 falls in the 75–79 range.
- 3 Read the letter. That band is a B+.
- 4 Read the grade point. A B+ carries 3.3 grade points on the 4.0 scale.
- 5 Weight by credit hours for the CGPA. Multiply each course’s grade point by its credit hours, sum, and divide by total credit hours.

Applying abroad with a Pakistani CGPA
Because the scale already runs to 4.00, a Pakistani CGPA is usually reported unchanged — but it is worth stating the percentage alongside it where the transcript gives both. An A at 85% in Pakistan is not the same threshold as an A at 93% elsewhere, and admissions readers who know the system will account for that.
Older Pakistani transcripts, and some affiliated colleges, report only percentages and a division — First Division at 60% and above, Second at 45–59, Third at 33–44. Those are annual-system results rather than semester GPAs, and an evaluator will treat them differently from a modern CGPA transcript.
