Bangladeshi Grade to GPA
Convert a Bangladeshi university percentage to a UGC letter grade and grade point.
72% falls in the 70–74 band, which is A− — 3.50 grade points on the same 4.00 scale US schools use.
This is the university scale. School-level SSC and HSC results use a different five-point GPA where A+ is 5.00 — see the table on this page for how the two relate.
On the UGC scale used by Bangladeshi universities, 80–100 is A+ worth 4.00, 75–79 an A worth 3.75, 70–74 an A− worth 3.50, and 65–69 a B+ worth 3.25. So 72% converts to 3.50 — already on the same 4.00 scale US schools use.
Two scales, one country
Bangladesh runs two different grade-point systems and confusing them is the most common mistake on an application. School-leaving results — SSC and HSC — use a 5.00 scale where A+ is 5.00, which is why a “GPA 5” is the headline result students celebrate. Universities, under the University Grants Commission framework, use a 4.00 scale where A+ is 4.00.
A university CGPA therefore needs no conversion for a US application: it is already out of 4.00. A school GPA of 5.00 does need context, because a reader who assumes a 4.0 maximum will misread it badly in the other direction.
Quarter-point steps
The UGC university scale moves in quarter points — 4.00, 3.75, 3.50, 3.25, 3.00 and so on — with each step covering five percentage points. That makes it finer than many national scales, and it means the difference between a 74 and a 75 is a quarter of a grade point rather than a full one.
Worked example
Converting a course mark of 72%.
- 1 Take the course percentage. The transcript records 72% for the course.
- 2 Find the band. 72 falls in the 70–74 range.
- 3 Read the letter. That band is an A−.
- 4 Read the grade point. An A− carries 3.50 on the 4.00 scale — the same scale a US transcript uses.
- 5 Weight by credits for the CGPA. Multiply each course’s grade point by its credits, sum, and divide by total credits.

Reporting it abroad
For a university CGPA, quote it as it stands and state the maximum: “CGPA 3.50 / 4.00”. No conversion is required, and recalculating it only introduces error.
For school results, always give the scale: “GPA 5.00 / 5.00 (HSC)” rather than “GPA 5”. The second reads as an impossibility on a 4.0 scale and can look like an error on the applicant’s part. Where both appear on an application, labelling which is which saves the reader from having to guess.
