Estimate page count from a word count, font, size, and line spacing.

About 250 words per page at this setting.

In 12 pt Times New Roman, single-spaced text runs about 500 words per page and double-spaced about 250, so a 1,000-word essay fills roughly 2 single-spaced or 4 double-spaced pages. Divide your word count by the words-per-page figure for your font and spacing.

What affects page count

Font, size, and line spacing decide how many words fit on a page. The tool starts from a words-per-page figure for your font and size, then scales it by spacing: single spacing keeps the full figure, 1.5 spacing keeps about two-thirds, and double spacing roughly halves it. Divide your word count by that figure to get the page estimate. Use the word counter to get an exact word total first.

pages = word count ÷ words per page

words per page depends on font, size, and spacing — e.g. 250 for double-spaced 12 pt Times

Worked example

A 1,000-word essay in 12 pt Times New Roman, double-spaced:

  1. 1
Find words per page for the font and size. 12 pt Times New Roman holds about 500 words on a single-spaced page.
  2. 2
Apply the spacing factor. Double spacing halves it: 500 × 0.5 = 250 words per page.
  3. 3
    Divide the word count. 1,000 ÷ 250 = 4.0 pages.

Common scenarios

Meeting a page minimum. If a paper must be five double-spaced pages in 12 pt Times, that is roughly 5 × 250 = 1,250 words — write to the word count and the pages follow.

Switching fonts. Arial and Calibri fit slightly fewer words per page than Times, so the same essay runs a touch longer in those fonts.

Why it is an estimate. Headings, block quotes, paragraph breaks, and wide margins all change the real layout, so treat the result as a close approximation.

How accurate is the estimate?
It’s a close approximation — actual page count varies with margins, paragraphs, and headings.
Which fonts are supported?
Times New Roman, Arial, and Calibri at 11 and 12 pt.
How does spacing change the count?

In 12 pt Times New Roman, roughly 1,250 words — about 250 words per double-spaced page.
Does font size matter much?
Yes — 11 pt fits noticeably more per page than 12 pt; for example, 12 pt Times holds about 500 words single-spaced versus about 560 at 11 pt.
How many words fit on a single-spaced page?
