Reading Time Calculator
Estimate how long your text takes to read silently, read aloud, or present.
Reading time is the word count divided by a reading speed. At an average silent rate of about 238 words per minute, a 1,000-word article takes roughly 4 minutes; read aloud at 183 wpm it runs about 5.5 minutes. Divide words by the rate to estimate any text.
How the estimates work
The tool counts the words in your text, then divides by a reading speed for three situations: silent reading, reading aloud, and presenting from slides. It uses typical rates — about 238 wpm silent, 183 wpm aloud, and 130 wpm for a presentation — because the same passage takes much longer to say than to skim. To size a spoken talk instead, the words to minutes calculator works from a target speaking pace.
silent 238 wpm · aloud 183 wpm · presentation 130 wpm
Worked example
A 950-word blog post, estimated three ways:
- 1 Silent reading at 238 wpm. 950 ÷ 238 = 3.99 minutes, about 4 minutes.
- 2 Reading aloud at 183 wpm. 950 ÷ 183 = 5.19 minutes, about 5 min 11 sec.
- 3 Presenting at 130 wpm. 950 ÷ 130 = 7.31 minutes, about 7 min 18 sec.
Reading speed by mode and reader
Typical adult ranges; speed varies with difficulty, familiarity, and language.
| Mode / reader | Words per minute |
|---|---|
| Slide presentation | ~130 |
| Reading aloud / narration | ~183 |
| Average adult, silent | ~238 |
| Skimming for gist | 400–700 |
Common scenarios
Planning a video script. Use the reading-aloud rate, then add time for pauses and on-screen actions that interrupt the narration.
Timing a class presentation. The presentation rate already accounts for pauses and emphasis, but rehearse — slides, questions, and nerves all add time.
Why it varies. Reading speed depends on text difficulty, the reader’s familiarity with the topic, and the language. Treat these as planning estimates, not exact times.
