Key numbers in Russian
Russian writes 2025 as две тысячи двадцать пять. Numbers are read left to right as space-separated words: hundreds, then tens, then units. The word for “thousand” agrees with its count — одна тысяча (1000), две тысячи (2000), пять тысяч (5000). Enter any integer to spell it out.
How Russian numbers are built
Russian reads a number in the same three layers as English — hundreds, tens, and units — but writes every piece as a separate word joined by spaces, never fused. So 123 is сто двадцать три (hundred, twenty, three) and 999 is девятьсот девяносто девять. There is no linking word between the parts, and no hyphens: you simply list the building blocks in order.
The units 0–10 are unique words (ноль, один, два … десять), the teens 11–19 end in -надцать (одиннадцать, двенадцать … девятнадцать), the tens have their own stems (двадцать, тридцать, сорок, пятьдесят … девяносто), and the hundreds too (сто, двести, триста, четыреста, пятьсот … девятьсот). The тысяча agreement
The hard part is the word for “thousand”. It is a feminine noun and changes form to agree with how many thousands there are, following Russian’s numeral-noun rules. When the thousands-count ends in 1 (but is not 11) you use тысяча: 1000 → одна тысяча, 21000 → двадцать одна тысяча. When it ends in 2, 3, or 4 (but is not 12–14) you use тысячи: 2000 → две тысячи, 3000 → три тысячи. Otherwise — 0 and 5–9 at the end, and the whole 11–14 range — you use тысяч: 5000 → пять тысяч, 100000 → сто тысяч, 111000 → сто одиннадцать тысяч.
Because тысяча is feminine, the count in front of it also takes the feminine unit forms: одна instead of один and две instead of два. That is why 2000 is две тысячи, not “два тысячи”, and 21000 is двадцать одна тысяча. The sub-thousand remainder after it stays in the plain masculine nominative shown here (1001 → одна тысяча один).
Worked example: 2025
Split 2025 into 2 thousands and a remainder of 25. Two thousands uses the feminine две and the agreeing plural тысячи, then the remainder 25 reads as двадцать пять.
- 1 Split off the thousands. Separate the number into thousands and the last three digits: 2025 is 2 thousands + 25; 2 (thousands) → две.
- 2 Agree the word тысяча. Ends in 1 (not 11) → тысяча; ends in 2–4 (not 12–14) → тысячи; otherwise → тысяч. Here 2 → тысячи, giving две тысячи.
- 3 Read the remainder. Spell the last three digits left to right as separate words: 25 → двадцать пять. Hundreds then tens then units, no linking word.
- 4 Join with spaces. Concatenate the groups with spaces: две тысячи + двадцать пять → две тысячи двадцать пять.

Watch-outs
Everything is spaced, nothing is fused. Unlike German, Russian never runs the words together and never hyphenates: 21 is двадцать один as two words, and 543 is пятьсот сорок три as three. Just list hundreds, tens, then units in that order.
Gender and case change the endings in real sentences. This tool shows the standalone masculine nominative cardinal, plus the feminine одна/две only where they are required before тысяча. In actual use, один agrees in gender with its noun (один стол, одна книга, одно окно), два becomes две before feminine nouns, and the whole number declines through Russian’s six cases (of two → двух, to five → пяти). Adjust the ending to match the noun and the case of your sentence.
