Cooking Measurement Converter
Convert cooking volumes between teaspoons, tablespoons, cups, fluid ounces, millilitres, and litres.
1 US cup = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 8 fluid ounces = 236.6 ml. One tablespoon holds 3 teaspoons (14.79 ml) and one fluid ounce is 2 tablespoons (29.57 ml). This converter uses US customary units and passes every amount through millilitres, so any volume converts cleanly to any other.
How cooking volume units relate
US recipe volumes nest neatly: 3 teaspoons make a tablespoon, 2 tablespoons make a fluid ounce, and 16 tablespoons make a cup. Larger amounts keep nesting too — 2 cups make a pint, 2 pints make a quart, and 4 quarts make a gallon. Metric recipes use millilitres and litres instead. Because all of these describe the same physical volume, you can convert between any pair by first expressing the amount in millilitres and then dividing by the millilitres in your target unit. That single hub keeps the arithmetic consistent no matter which direction you go.

Worked example: ¾ cup to tablespoons and millilitres
Start from cups, move through millilitres, then land on the unit you need.
- 1 Note the amount and its unit. Here we convert ¾ cup (0.75 cup).
- 2 Convert to millilitres. 0.75 × 236.588 = 177.44 ml, since 1 cup = 236.588 ml.
- 3 Divide by the target unit’s ml. For tablespoons: 177.44 ÷ 14.7868 = 12 tbsp. For teaspoons: 177.44 ÷ 4.92892 = 36 tsp.
- 4 Read the millilitre value directly. The ml figure is already the metric answer: ¾ cup ≈ 177.4 ml.

US, metric, and UK cups are not the same
The word “cup” means different volumes around the world. A US customary cup is about 237 ml (used here), a metric cup is exactly 250 ml, and a UK/Imperial cup is roughly 284 ml. A recipe that calls for a “cup” can therefore differ by up to 20% depending on where it was written, so always match your measuring cup to the recipe’s origin. Also remember that these are volume conversions: they tell you how much space an ingredient fills, not how much it weighs. Dry ingredients like flour and sugar have very different densities, so 1 cup of flour and 1 cup of sugar weigh different amounts — for weight, use a cups-to-grams tool or a kitchen scale instead.
