One US stick of butter equals 113.4 g, which is the same as 8 tablespoons, ½ cup, or 4 ounces. This converter uses grams as the common reference: it turns your amount into grams first, then divides into every other unit, so a stick, a cup, and 226.8 g always stay in exact agreement.

How butter measurements relate

American recipes measure butter in sticks, and each stick is wrapped with a tablespoon scale printed on the paper. One stick weighs 113.4 g and holds 8 tablespoons, which is exactly ½ cup or 4 ounces. Because two sticks make a cup, a full cup of butter is 226.8 g. Working through grams keeps every unit consistent: one tablespoon is 14.175 g, and one ounce is 28.35 g.

grams = amount × (grams per unit), then unit = grams ÷ (grams per that unit)

Worked example: 2 sticks into cups and grams

Convert the amount to grams, then divide into whichever unit the recipe wants.

  1. 1
Note what one stick is. 1 US stick = 113.4 g = 8 tablespoons = ½ cup = 4 ounces. This is the anchor for every other unit.
  2. 2
    Turn your amount into grams. Multiply by the grams-per-unit value. For 2 sticks: 2 × 113.4 = 226.8 g.
  3. 3
    Divide grams into the unit you need. Cups = grams ÷ 226.8, so 226.8 ÷ 226.8 = 1 cup. Tablespoons = grams ÷ 14.175 = 16 tbsp.
  4. 4
Round sensibly for the kitchen. Butter tolerates small rounding, so 113.4 g is fine to read as roughly 113 g on a scale.

US sticks vs European blocks

The stick is a North American convention: butter there is sold in ¼-pound (113.4 g) sticks, four to a pound. Most of Europe never adopted it — butter is sold in blocks, very often 250 g, and recipes simply call for a weight in grams. That means there is no clean “stick” in a European pack: a 250 g block works out to about 2.2 sticks, not a round number. This tool follows the US definition of a stick throughout, so if you are baking from a European recipe, weigh the butter in grams and let the converter show the equivalent sticks, cups, and tablespoons.

How many grams are in a stick of butter?
One US stick of butter weighs 113.4 g — a quarter of a pound. In everyday baking you can round this to about 113 g on a kitchen scale without affecting the result.
How many tablespoons are in a stick of butter?
A stick holds 8 tablespoons, which is why US butter wrappers print tablespoon markings from 1 to 8. That also makes one stick equal to ½ cup.
How many sticks are in a cup of butter?
Two sticks make one cup, because each stick is ½ cup. A full cup of butter therefore weighs 226.8 g and holds 16 tablespoons.
How many sticks are in a 250 g European block?
About 2.2 sticks. Divide 250 by 113.4 to get 2.205, so a standard 250 g block is a little more than two US sticks — not a round number, which is why weighing in grams is more precise.
Does this work for margarine and other spreads?
The weight-to-stick and stick-to-cup ratios hold for anything sold in US stick form, including most stick margarine. Whipped or tub spreads are aerated, so their volume-to-weight relationship differs and these figures will be off.
Why measure butter by weight instead of cups?
Butter is soft and packs unevenly, so scooping it into a cup is imprecise. Weighing in grams — using 1 stick = 113.4 g — is the most reliable way to get the amount a recipe intends.
