Turkish Grade to GPA
Convert a Turkish 100-point mark to its YÖK letter grade and 4.00 grade point.
86 falls in the 85–89 band, which is the letter BA and carries 3.50 grade points.
Because the Turkish scale is already out of 4.00, a Turkish CGPA is normally reported to US schools unchanged.
Percentage cut-offs vary between Turkish universities, and many apply relative grading (bağıl değerlendirme) so the same mark can earn different letters in different classes. Your transcript’s own letters are authoritative.
Turkish universities already grade on a 4.00 scale through double letters: 90–100 is AA (4.00), 85–89 BA (3.50), 80–84 BB (3.00), 75–79 CB (2.50), 70–74 CC (2.00), 60–69 DC (1.50), and 50–59 DD (1.00). So an 86 is a BA, worth 3.50.
Turkey grades on 4.00 already
Unlike most countries whose transcripts need converting, Turkey uses a 4.00 grade-point scale natively. Courses are marked out of 100, that mark becomes a double letter — AA through FF — and each letter carries a grade point. The cumulative average, the genel not ortalaması or GANO, is therefore already a number a US admissions office recognises.
This is why a Turkish applicant usually reports their CGPA unchanged rather than converting it. What this tool answers is the step before that: which letter and how many grade points a given course mark is worth, under the standard framework set by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK).
Relative grading changes the cut-offs
Many Turkish universities apply bağıl değerlendirme — relative grading — where letters are assigned against the class distribution rather than fixed thresholds. Under that system an 82 in a strong cohort might be a BB while the same 82 in a weaker one is a BA. The bands here are the standard reference points, and your transcript’s own letters always take precedence.
Worked example
Converting a course mark of 86 to a letter and grade point.
- 1 Start with the 100-point mark. The course mark on the transcript is 86.
- 2 Find the letter band. 86 sits in the 85–89 range, which is the letter BA.
- 3 Read the grade point. BA carries 3.50 grade points on the 4.00 scale.
- 4 Weight by credits for the average. Multiply each course’s grade point by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits to get the GANO.
Turkish marks, letters, and grade points
The YÖK-standard framework used by Turkish universities. Individual institutions set their own exact cut-offs, and many use relative grading.
| Mark | Letter | Grade point | Approximate US letter |
|---|---|---|---|
| 90–100 | AA | 4.00 | A |
| 85–89 | BA | 3.50 | A− / B+ |
| 80–84 | BB | 3.00 | B |
| 75–79 | CB | 2.50 | B− / C+ |
| 70–74 | CC | 2.00 | C |
| 60–69 | DC | 1.50 | C− / D+ |
| 50–59 | DD | 1.00 | D |
| Below 50 | FF | 0.00 | F |
Passing, and what counts as good
YÖK requires a cumulative average of at least 2.00 to graduate from an undergraduate programme. DC and DD are conditional passes: they count towards graduation as long as the overall CGPA stays above that threshold, and a student below it may have to repeat those courses.
For applications abroad, remember that a Turkish 3.20 is not the same achievement as a US 3.20 — grading cultures differ, and Turkish relative grading can compress the top of the distribution. Some universities will ask for a credential evaluation from a service such as WES rather than accepting the transcript figure directly.
