Indonesian IPK to GPA
Read an Indonesian IPK on the US 4.0 scale and find the graduation predicate.
Indonesia already uses a 4.00 scale with A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, and D = 1, so the IPK transfers unchanged.
3.01–3.50 on the IPK. Cum laude usually also requires no D or E grades and completion within the normal study period, and thresholds vary slightly by institution.
Because both scales run to 4.00, no arithmetic is needed. What differs is the grading culture behind the number, which is why some universities still ask for a credential evaluation.
Indonesia already grades on a 4.00 scale — A is 4, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1, and E is 0 — so an IPK transfers to a US GPA unchanged. An IPK of 3.28 is a 3.28, and it falls in the Sangat Memuaskan predicate band of 3.01 to 3.50.
The IPK needs no conversion
The indeks prestasi kumulatif — IPK — is Indonesia’s cumulative grade point average, and it runs on the same 0 to 4.00 scale a US transcript uses. There is no arithmetic to do: a 3.28 in Jakarta is a 3.28 in an application form, and recalculating it only risks introducing an error.
The per-semester figure is the indeks prestasi semester (IPS), the same calculation over one term. Both are credit-weighted using SKS — satuan kredit semester — which work like US credit hours, so the weighting behaves the way an admissions reader expects.
What differs is the culture, not the scale
Sharing a maximum does not make two systems identical. Grading practice, the difficulty of an A, and how often the bottom of the scale is used all vary between Indonesian institutions and between countries. That is why some universities still ask for a credential evaluation even when the number needs no adjusting — they are interpreting the record, not converting it.
Worked example
Reading an IPK of 3.28.
- 1 Take the IPK from the transcript. The transkrip nilai shows an IPK of 3.28 out of 4.00.
- 2 Confirm the maximum is 4.00. Indonesian universities use A = 4, B = 3, C = 2, D = 1, E = 0, so the ceiling matches the US scale.
- 3 Report it unchanged. The US 4.0-scale figure is 3.28 — no conversion is applied.
- 4 Add the predicate. 3.28 falls between 3.01 and 3.50, which is Sangat Memuaskan.

Cum laude is more than a number
Reaching an IPK of 3.51 does not by itself earn Dengan Pujian. Most institutions add conditions: no D or E grades anywhere on the transcript, and completion within the normal study period rather than an extended one. A student who repeated a year, or who carries a single D, typically graduates Sangat Memuaskan on the same IPK.
The thresholds themselves also move slightly between universities, by a hundredth here or there. Where the predicate matters to an application, quote what your own transcript or degree certificate states rather than inferring it from the number.
