To convert a GPA between scales, anchor it on the US 4.0 scale first, then read across. An 85% sits in the 83–86 band, so it becomes a US 3.0, which scales to a 7.5 Indian CGPA-10, inverts to a 2.0 German grade, and lands in the UK Lower Second (2:2). Treat results as approximate, not official.
How the conversion works
Every country grades differently — a US 4.0, a UK First, a German 1.0, and an Indian 10 CGPA all mean “top marks,” but the numbers do not line up. This converter uses the US 4.0 scale as a hub: it first normalizes whatever grade you enter onto the 4.0 scale, then reads the equivalent in each of the other systems from that anchor.
A percentage is mapped to 4.0 in bands (the table below); India’s CGPA-10 scales proportionally; and Germany’s 1–5 scale is inverted, since there a lower number is better.
Worked example
Converting an 85% to the other systems.
- 1 Map the percentage to 4.0. 85% falls in the 83–86 band, so it becomes a 3.0 on the US scale.
- 2 Scale to India’s CGPA-10. (3.0 ÷ 4) × 10 = 7.5 CGPA.
- 3 Invert for Germany. 5 − 3.0 = 2.0 on the German 1–5 scale, and a 3.0 lands in the UK Lower Second (2:2) band.

When you need this
Applying abroad. A university in another country states minimums in its own scale; converting shows whether your grade clears the bar.
Reading an international transcript. A German 2.0 or an Indian 7.5 CGPA only makes sense once it is placed on a familiar scale.

Conversions are approximate. Admissions offices and credential evaluators such as WES use their own official tables, and the boundaries between bands differ by institution — check with your target institution before relying on a figure.
