Greek Grade to GPA
Convert a Greek βαθμός on the 0–10 scale to a US 4.0 GPA.
7.6 is Λίαν καλώς (Very good), in the 6.5–8.49 band, which maps to 3.0 on the US 4.0 scale.
The pass mark at Greek universities is 5.0, and the named bands above are the same ones used to describe a degree result. Some institutions also grade on a 20-point scale.
Greek university grades run 0 to 10 with a pass mark of 5. The named bands are Άριστα from 8.5, Λίαν Καλώς from 6.5, and Καλώς from 5.0 — read as A, B, and C. So a 7.6 is Λίαν Καλώς, worth 3.0 on the US scale.
Three named bands above the pass mark
Greece grades on a 0–10 scale where 5 is the minimum pass. Above it sit three named bands that describe both a course grade and a degree result: Καλώς (good, 5.0–6.49), Λίαν Καλώς (very good, 6.5–8.49), and Άριστα (excellent, 8.5–10).
The band names carry more weight in Greece than the decimal itself. A graduate describes their degree as Λίαν Καλώς rather than quoting a 7.6, and the distinction between the bands is what employers and postgraduate programmes look at first.
An unusually wide middle band
Λίαν Καλώς covers two full points of the scale, from 6.5 to 8.49, so it holds a broad span of performance. A 6.6 and an 8.4 share a band and a US letter, which flattens a real difference. Where your average sits high inside that range, it is worth quoting the number alongside the band so the distinction is not lost.
Worked example
Converting a grade of 7.6 out of 10.
- 1 Take the βαθμός. The course grade or degree average is 7.6 on the Greek 10-point scale.
- 2 Check it passes. 7.6 is above the pass mark of 5.0.
- 3 Find the named band. 7.6 falls between 6.5 and 8.49, which is Λίαν Καλώς.
- 4 Read the US equivalent. Λίαν Καλώς is read as a B, which is 3.0 on the US 4.0 scale.

The degree average and how to report it
A Greek degree result is the credit-weighted average of course grades, reported to two decimal places and accompanied by its band name. Greek higher education uses ECTS credits, so the weighting is directly comparable to a US credit-hour average.
When applying abroad, write the result as “7.60 / 10, Λίαν Καλώς (≈ 3.0 / 4.0)”. Greek grading is comparatively strict — Άριστα is not commonly awarded across a whole degree — so an admissions reader who knows the system will read a high Λίαν Καλώς more favourably than the converted 3.0 alone suggests.
