The WES 4.0 conversion for Chinese percentages
Chinese universities grade on a 100-point percentage scale rather than a letter or 4.0 grade-point system. When you apply to a US programme, an evaluator such as World Education Services (WES) restates that percentage on the familiar 4.0 GPA scale so admissions officers can compare it with domestic transcripts.
WES uses a deliberately coarse mapping: each 10-point band of your percentage becomes one grade point. A percentage of 85 or above is already an A (4.0); 75–84 is a B (3.0); 65–74 is a C (2.0); 60–64 is a D (1.0); and anything below 60 — China’s usual passing mark — is an F (0.0). Because the bands are wide, a strong 92% and a borderline 86% both land on the same 4.0.
Worked example
Converting an 88% Chinese average to a US GPA on the WES 4.0 scale.
- 1 Start with your Chinese percentage. Use your course or cumulative average on the 100-point scale — for example, 88%.
- 2 Find the WES band. An 88% sits in the 85–100 band, the top tier of the WES 4.0 scale.
- 3 Read the GPA and letter. The 85–100 band maps to 4.0 (A), so 88% becomes a 4.0 GPA.

How admissions offices read this number
WES applies this coarse mapping so a foreign transcript can be summarised in a single, comparable GPA for credential evaluation. It is intentionally simplified: it does not distinguish a 4.0 earned at 100% from one earned at 85%, and it treats 60 as the passing floor because that is the standard pass mark at Chinese universities.
Not every institution uses it. Some universities run their own finer conversion — for example splitting the 4.0 range into A and A− bands, or converting each 3-point step — while others prefer to read your original percentage alongside a school profile. Because the method genuinely changes the result, use the scale the receiving university or evaluation service specifies, and quote your percentage exactly as your transcript states it.
