How steps become distance and calories

A step counter only knows how many steps you took, so turning that into distance needs your stride length — the ground one step covers. Multiply steps by stride and you have distance. Stride varies with leg length, so a common estimate is stride ≈ your height × 0.415 for walking; if you know your true stride, enter it directly.

From distance, calories follow from body weight, because heavier bodies spend more energy moving the same distance. A widely used rule of thumb is about half a calorie per kilogram per kilometre walked, which this tool applies as distance(km) × weight(kg) × 0.53. Every value here is a labelled estimate, not a measured figure.

Estimate stride from height, multiply by steps for distance, then scale distance by weight for calories:

Reading the result

Stride length is the biggest swing factor: it grows with height and lengthens as you speed up, so the same 10,000 steps can be under 7 km for a shorter person and well over 8 km for a taller, faster one. The calorie figure is looser still, since pace, gradient, and how efficiently you move all change energy cost.

The famous 10,000-steps target is a marketing figure — it traces back to a 1960s Japanese pedometer named manpo-kei (“10,000-step meter”), not a clinical study. Research links more daily steps to better health, but there is no single magic number. Use these estimates for motivation and rough tracking, not as a precise medical measurement.

How is stride length estimated?
For walking, stride is approximated as your height × 0.415, so a 170 cm person gets about 0.7055 m per step. It is only an estimate — real stride depends on leg length, pace, and gait. If you have measured your own stride, enter it directly for a more accurate distance.
How accurate is this calculator?
Treat it as a ballpark. Distance is as good as your stride estimate, which can be off by 10–20% from the height rule. Calories are looser still, since pace, terrain, and movement efficiency all matter. It is fine for tracking trends, not for precise energy accounting.
Why does body weight change the calories?
Heavier bodies spend more energy to move the same distance, so calories scale with weight. The estimate uses about half a calorie per kilogram per kilometre — distance(km) × weight(kg) × 0.53 — which is why a 90 kg walker burns more than a 60 kg walker over the same steps.
Does walking speed affect the estimate?
It affects both parts. Faster walking lengthens your stride, so the same step count covers more distance, and brisk or uphill walking raises the calories per kilometre above the 0.53 rule of thumb. This tool assumes a steady walking pace, so treat fast or hilly walks as an underestimate.
Is 10,000 steps a scientifically required target?
No. The 10,000-steps goal came from a 1960s Japanese pedometer brand, not a clinical trial. Studies do show health benefits rise with more daily steps, with gains appearing well below 10,000, so use it as a convenient goal rather than a medical rule.
Does this count calories from running?
It is tuned for walking. Running covers more ground per step and burns roughly twice the calories per kilometre, so both the stride and the 0.53 factor understate a run. For runs, use a pace-based estimate instead of this step-count method.
