100/ 120≈ C1

25 + 26 + 24 + 25 = 100. Approximate overall CEFR: C1 (ETS maps CEFR per section, not from the total).

Your TOEFL iBT total is simply the sum of the four section scores — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — each reported from 0 to 30. So a candidate scoring 25, 26, 24, and 25 gets 25 + 26 + 24 + 25 = 100 out of 120. There is no weighting: every section counts equally toward the total.

How the TOEFL iBT total works

The TOEFL iBT reports four section scores — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — and each is scaled from 0 to 30. Your total score is just those four numbers added together, giving a figure between 0 and 120. Unlike some admissions tests, the sections are not weighted or averaged: a point in Speaking is worth exactly as much as a point in Reading.

Because the total is a plain sum, the highest possible score is 30 × 4 = 120 and the lowest is 0. Knowing the total is useful for a quick check against a program’s stated minimum, but many universities also set a floor for each individual section, so the four numbers matter on their own as well.

An approximate CEFR level

It is common to translate a TOEFL total into a rough CEFR level (A1–C2). This calculator does that using broad bands — for example a total of 95 or above sits around C1. Treat this as approximate only: ETS officially maps CEFR per section, not from the total, so the total-based level is a convenience, not the official reading.

  1. 1
Note each section score. Find your Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing scores — each is reported from 0 to 30.
  2. 2
Add the four together. For example, 25 + 26 + 24 + 25. There is no weighting, so you simply sum them.
  3. 3
Read the total. The sum is your TOEFL iBT total, from 0 to 120 — here, 100.
  4. 4
Check the approximate CEFR band. A total of 100 falls in the 95+ range, so it maps to roughly C1 — a rough guide, not the official per-section mapping.
  5. 5
Compare with the requirement. Confirm your total meets the program’s minimum, and check any minimum required in each individual section too.

Approximate TOEFL total → CEFR level

Approximate only. ETS officially maps CEFR per section, not from the total — use these bands as a rough guide, not an official conversion.

What to keep in mind

Unlike tests that average or weight their parts, the TOEFL iBT total is a straight sum — the four sections simply add up, with no section counting for more than another. That makes the arithmetic easy, but it also means a weak section can be masked by strong ones in the total.

This is why the CEFR level shown here is only approximate: the official CEFR mapping is defined per section, so two people with the same total of 100 can sit at different CEFR levels depending on how their points are distributed. And because many universities set both a minimum total and minimum section scores, always read the exact requirement — hitting the total alone may not be enough if one section falls short.

How is the TOEFL total calculated?
It is the sum of the four section scores — Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing — each reported from 0 to 30. Add them together for a total between 0 and 120. There is no weighting or averaging: 25 + 26 + 24 + 25 = 100.
What is the maximum TOEFL iBT score?
The maximum is 120. Each of the four sections is capped at 30, so 30 × 4 = 120 is the highest total possible. The lowest is 0.
What is a good TOEFL score?
It depends on the program, but many universities ask for a total of 80–100, and competitive or graduate programs often want 100 or above. Always check the specific minimum the school lists — including any per-section floor.
Are the four sections weighted differently?
No. Every section carries equal weight in the total because it is a plain sum. A point in Speaking counts exactly the same as a point in Reading toward your 0–120 total.
Is the CEFR level from the total official?
No — it is approximate. ETS officially maps CEFR per individual section, not from the total, so the total-based level here is only a convenience. Two people with the same total can sit at different CEFR levels.
Do universities look at section scores or just the total?
Often both. Many programs set a minimum total and also a minimum score in one or more sections, so meeting the total alone may not satisfy the requirement if a single section is too low.
